The
Elms along Walmer Street, Kew have survived one of the heaviest
infestations of elm leaf beetle in Melbourne. Compare the
Two photographs taken by Greg Le Foe, of the Keith Turnbull
Research Institute, over the last two summers.
The photo on the
left shows the avenue elms, owned by Parks Victoria, completely
defoliated. Also note, to the left of the photo, amongst the
lush foliage of the Plane trees, another group of defoliated
elms owned by the City of Boroondara. This was the second
consecutive year of serious defoliation. These trees were
in serious trouble.
Arborspray was
contracted to treat these trees in season 1999. The lower
section of the avenue was treated with a Confidor soil injection
in September, the council elms with a Novador canopy spray
in early December and the balance of the avenue trees were
canopy sprayed with Condifor in November. All these treatments
were a complete success. Compare the result. The trees in
the second photo have a lush full canopy and casting shade
again.
